"Where Amateurs Perfect Their Pitch" - Los Angeles Times
The Inside Pitch is a Facebook group for screenwriters and filmmakers that was spun off from “twoadverbs,” an online writers’ cooperative that started 20+ years ago in response to a series of free writing workshops Chris held at the Beverly Hills Library and then in a downtown loft (which, when not hosting writers, was a sound stage for adult films). Chris and his co-worker Jack d’Annibale critiqued new screenplays in the workshop, but dedicated the last half hour to general questions, which always slanted toward writers pitching their loglines for feedback. It was this element of the workshop that really caught on. The Los Angeles Times wrote a story about the workshops (headlined Where Amateurs Perfect Their Pitch) and featured it on the front page of their Calendar section. The article introduced Chris and Jack's efforts to the city, and they held free pitch workshops all around town, where writers gathered to share their loglines for feedback and fun. (They often met in a small, crowded room above the now defunct “Take One Bookstore” in Westwood.) An executive from local television station LA36 attended one of those events and suggested the idea of a one-off TV show – a filmed version of the logline pitch workshops – sort of an American Idol meets The Antiques Roadshow. It was shot in December 2003 and was called The Inside Pitch. It re-ran hundreds of times on LA36. The show was nominated for a Los Angeles Area Emmy Award.
The vision for the Facebook group was to create an online classroom - a continuation of those aforementioned live workshops - a safe place to share ideas, information, feedback, and where Chris could bring the kind of thing he does at the workplace to writers around the world who maybe haven’t had a chance to live or work in the industry and/or don’t get much opportunity to talk about the craft and business of writing. He also hoped to weed out the bad advice, misinformation, pay-to-play saturation, and Hollywood myths that brainwash writers and torpedo their efforts. The group will celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2027.
This article discusses thelive & free writing workshop at the Beverly Hills Library that eventually led to The Inside Pitch. Journalist Dana Calvo left the newsroom for the writers' room and penned several TV series.
During one of thelive pitch sessions at the bookstore on Santa Monica Blvd in Westwood, a young woman pitched her musical - "a psychedelic journey through a post-modern American dream" - even singing a brief song.
